The Uttar Pradesh government has increased the widow pension to ₹1,000 per month, effective April 2025, to support destitute widows aged 18–60 from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The scheme aims to ensure financial stability, with direct bank transfers and a streamlined application process, benefiting thousands of women across the state.

UP Enhances Widow Pension to ₹1,000 Monthly for Destitute Women

The Uttar Pradesh government has rolled out a significant update to its Vidhwa Pension Yojana, raising the monthly financial assistance for eligible widows to ₹1,000, effective from April 1, 2025. This increase from the previous ₹500 aims to provide greater economic support to women who have lost their spouses and belong to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. The scheme targets widows aged 18 to 60 years, ensuring they can meet basic needs without relying on external support.

As of September 2025, over 25 lakh widows are registered under the scheme, with the state disbursing approximately ₹3,000 crore annually, according to data from the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department. The enhanced pension is directly credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The move has been lauded by social activists for addressing the financial vulnerabilities of widows, particularly in rural areas where economic opportunities are limited.

Eligibility for the scheme remains stringent to ensure aid reaches those in genuine need. Applicants must be permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh, with a family income not exceeding ₹10,000 per month. Widows who remarry or have financially independent adult children are ineligible. Required documents include a BPL ration card, the husband’s death certificate, Aadhaar card, bank passbook, and age proof. Applications can be submitted online via the state’s e-Pension portal (epension.up.nic.in) or offline at local Janpad Panchayat or Municipal Corporation offices.

The application process has been simplified to improve accessibility. After submission, verification is completed within 1–3 months, with successful applicants receiving pensions directly in their bank accounts. The state has also introduced an online status-checking feature on the e-Pension portal, allowing applicants to track their application using their registration and bank account numbers.

In addition to financial aid, the scheme aligns with broader women’s welfare initiatives in Uttar Pradesh, such as the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Yojana and women’s shelter programs, which provide vocational training and legal aid to destitute women. The government has allocated funds to conduct awareness campaigns in rural areas to ensure eligible widows are informed about the scheme. District Probation Officers have been tasked with facilitating outreach and assisting with applications.

However, challenges persist. Many widows, particularly in remote areas, remain unaware of the scheme or face difficulties navigating the online application process. Social workers have urged the government to establish more Common Service Centres (CSCs) to assist with applications and increase digital literacy among rural women. Additionally, some beneficiaries have reported delays in pension disbursal, prompting the state to set up grievance redressal mechanisms, including a dedicated helpline.

The enhanced pension has sparked discussions about its adequacy, with activists arguing that ₹1,000 per month, while an improvement, may still fall short of addressing rising living costs. Comparisons with other states, such as Haryana, which offers ₹3,000 per month, and Goa, providing ₹4,000, have fueled calls for further increases. Nonetheless, the Uttar Pradesh government’s commitment to supporting widows through this scheme underscores its focus on social security for marginalized groups.
